Aores is an elongated island. The distance of Labuhanbajo from west to Larantuka in the east amounts to 677 km. At east of Flores lies the last small islands of the province Nusa
Tengara Timur which border to the south Eastern molukken. The small islands Solor, Adonara, and Lembata form together the Solor archipelago. Pantar and Alor determine part of the Alor archipelago.
Flores have 15 volcanos, of which the Keli Mutu, the mountain of spirits the most known is. This volcano is a nature wonder of the first order. The high volcano has three craters, of which the lakes have several colours.
Flores have to contend regularly with powerful earthquakes. On 12 December 1992 the island was found by a tremor which had a strength between 6.8 and 7.5 on the scale of Richter. The epicentre lay on 30 kilometres from Maumere in the sea. Most of the victims have fallen by everything destronging golves, which were the consequence of the earthquake. The earthquake and the hige golven cost totally 2500 lives, among almost the whole population.
