Health & Habitat

In the village there is clinic that provides vaccination, check up and medication which is handled by nurse. Unfortunately, we find in the clinic that the supply of medicine is now erratic, probably because of the economic crisis. The mid-wife can still do their jobs though providing pre-natal examinations and monitoring for pregnant mothers, they also make trip out into the village to help them to give birth. In almost each sub-village there is integrated health post (Posyandu) where woman bring their children to be weigh each month for growth monitoring. But a closer look at the habitat surrounding villagers' houses and talks with village leaders tells us that certain decease are prevalent and are a returning feature is seasonal cycles diarrhea and malaria being the most deadly of them, followed by respiratory infections and skin disease.

A 3 month harvest from 3 month's rain the vicious cycle
We arrive at our final stop of journey, the meeting in which the villagers are analyzing their daily problems and the causes of them. Men in sarongs and woman with traditional herbal masques on the faces sit on the floor of a simple stilted house and analyze the pieces of their lives. Overwhelmingly, their main problem is lack of money.

The rain only falls for three months of the year, they say, meanwhile their main crops of rice and green peas take at least three months until harvest. At present, there are no irrigation systems in place, and many times their crops fails. The next season come, and short of cash, they are forced to borrow seeds from a local loan shark. Later, if their crop survives the short rains, they must return a portion of their crop to the loan shark, but 5 times the amount they originally borrowed. Very little is left over to carry them through the next 9 months. What little they have left, they lack the management skills to plan wisely the best use of limited resources. We can easily imagine the effects this cycle has on basic family and village development, like health care and education and the many other needs of their children.
