We first land in Mataram, the capital of province of West Nusa Tenggara, on the neighboring island of Lombok. We could take a tiny commercial passenger plane to Sumbawa, for the spirit of adventure, we suggest to go overland and oversea instead. After an hour and a half drive across lush, green Lombok, you arrive at a simple port and get on the small ferry boat bound for the large, looming Sumbawa in the near distance. With about 50 other passengers, several cars, and blaring TV on board, you pass the time by flirting with the many small children, and exchanging cheerful nods with older, curious passengers who sneak glances at us.
