Tanjung Luar The aroma common to most fish markets, the beehive of seaside activity, the colourful play of watery reflectors greet you at Tanjung Luar. But this is no covered market. Selling takes place right by the blue sea shore. You will see fishermen arriving tired from many days spent on the open ocean. You will see arrivals from other islands on a inter-island taxi service of small sampans ( traditional canoes). You will see the salt sellers, kids fishing off the main jetty, moored vessels receiving a new coat of paint. You will see barracuda, sword fish, sea bream, schnapper and tiny sardines. But most exciting of all you will see sharks. Every morning in an activity that has been acted out for many years, a shark catch is auctioned in an open room a short distance away from the sea. It is important to note that every part of the shark is utilised. Not just the fins. Here there is no contribution to the ecoloical nightmare experienced by sharks everywhere. In the surroundings of the fish market you find much traditional pile houses which are painted in colourful colours and beautiful mangrove bunches where between the small fishes swim. In the surrouding of the fish market are the salt fields and the small salt raffinarderijen. These are certainly worth to visit it. |
